Intervention & Referral Service (I&RS)

Intervention & Referral Services (I&RS) is an interdisciplinary team of professionals within the school environment who come together throughout the school year to formulate coordinated services and team delivery systems to address the full range of student learning, behavior, social, and health problems in the general education program as well as for students determined to be in need of special education programs, special services, or Gifted and Talented. According to N.J.A.C

The I&RS committee follows a multidisciplinary approach with a well-articulated system of supportive activities and services for staff who have identified student difficulties and those who will be involved in the improvement of the identified educational concerns.

It is important to recognize that the provision of reasonable accommodations is an alteration of "how" the learning experience is delivered. This is not an alteration of "what" is being taught or the expectations for meeting standards or curriculum goals (modifications).

No one resource should be used in isolation, as the creativity and knowledge of our educational team in conjunction with their relationships with students, offer the most successful opportunities for support. Nevertheless, the guidance provided by the NJDOE, as well as their NJTSS process, provides a framework for our I&RS operations and protocols.
